NPO CKTI has its own experimental combined heat power plant (CHPP) established in 1907 to supply power to the 1st  stage of the city street railway network. The plant was nationalized in 1918 and involved in the GOELRO (state project for electrification of Russia) implementation sphere. Since 1938 the plant has been considered as an organization subdivision of NPO CKTI.

To date the CKTI’s CHPP is mainly aimed, along with external heat and power supply, at power supply to test and laboratory facilities of NPO CKTI developing fundamental power equipment for domestic power mechanical engineering.

NPO CKTI’s test and laboratory facilities include around 100 experimental installations and test rigs for the development and research into the following fields:

  •        Steam turbine plants;
  •        Gas turbine plants and combined-cycle plants, compressors and superchargers;
  •        Heat-exchangers;
  •        Hydraulic machines;
  •        Power engineering equipment strength and endurance as required;
  •        Heat-mass exchange and hydrodynamics of heat-power engineering equipment for nuclear power plants;
  •        Hydraulic pumps;
  •        Clean burners for boilers and high-pressure generators;
  •        Fuel treatment and dust/ash extraction equipment designs, etc.

Along with power supply to CKTI’s own experimental development facilities and auxiliaries the CKTI’s CHPP supplies heat and power to external consumers.

The wholesale consumers/resellers are OAO PSK (Public JSC SPb Sales Company) and OAO RZhD (Public JSC Russian Railways) Branch. Three heat mains spread out from the CHPP: toward Telezhnaya street (Central district), to Nevsky plant and toward Moskovsky railway terminal. The steam consumers directly from the CHPP are OAO RZhD, OAO Fanplast and Mechnikov hospital.

CHPP includes three turbine generators per 6 MW each and 9 boilers (8 steam + 1 water).

CHPP total thermal capacity according to boilers’ rating amounts to 460 t/h or 414 Gcal/h. Actual boilers’ capacity per operational charts is 395 t/h or 364 Gcal/h.

CKTI’s CHPP operation meets the requirements for environmental frienliness and operational safety of the equipment, its trouble-free condition, reliability and economic efficiency.

Natural gas is the basic fuel for the CHPP, while oil fuel – the backup one.
